Philanthropy and conflict

How can philanthropy help fund peaceful solutions?

At no point since the end of the Second World War have there been so many armed conflicts. According to the World Peace Index, there are currently 56 active violent conflicts, and few of them are being resolved through peaceful negotiations.

Despite the rise of violence, only one percent of philanthropic funding has gone to peacekeeping. Many funders – even those that support social justice causes – remain unaware of the link between social injustice and the outbreak of violent conflict.

In this webinar, Alliance will explore what philanthropy can do to address the urgent humanitarian situations in countries impacted by violence, and how they can best support long-lasting peace in these regions.

Questions will include:

  • Why do you think donors are reluctant to engage with funding work that directly goes to resolving conflict?
  • Conversation about peace is often about men on the ground negotiating with other men in politics. What role do women have to play in the peace process – and what should funders know about engaging women in the peace process?
  • Do conflicts receive less interest from foundations because funders are afraid of appearing overly political?
